The Kent Community Timebank has been described in many ways, but one thing is clear: the organization’s five core values are Assets, Re-Defining Work, Reciprocity, Social Networks, and Respect. At its heart, the Timebank builds community by helping members naturally support one another through everyday exchanges that meet individual and community needs or wants. A Timebank is fairly simple: time becomes the currency, everyone’s contributions hold equal value (1hour=1Timecredit). Participation grows organically from relationships rather than obligations.
A monthly potluck is KCTB’s flagship community event. It offers a wonderful opportunity for current members to demonstrate the organization’s strength while introducing the broader community to the many benefits of the Timebank.
To become a member, simply apply through the open-source software hourWorld and attend one 2 hour full-orientation. This software is used to record “transactions.” Although similar to a bank account, hourWorld functions as a neutral third party, removing the need for terms like volunteering, bartering, or cash. Instead, exchanges are recorded without assigning intrinsic monetary value, which legitimizes the interaction and keeps all contributions equal.
Many current members have said that events like the KCTB Monthly Potluck helped them grow in multiple areas of their lives—making friends, discovering new talents, and learning how to apply their value to the world around them. Young or old, those who have struggled to find a safe and welcoming environment often thrive in the Timebank, especially by participating in the monthly potluck.
After meeting in different locations over the years, the potluck is usually hosted at the Roy Smith Shelterhouse in Fred Fuller Park in Kent, Ohio. It takes place on the second Friday of each month. Invited individuals and KCTB members bring food to contribute to the feast, with a portion large enough for themselves and any guests they bring. The December 2025
KCTB Potluck will be hosted at the Historical Jailhouse, located just north of the Shelterhouse.
Find yourself—or apply yourself—by recognizing the self-worth we all carry as assets in our community. The community has the power to create both big and small changes, to welcome all, and to meet the needs and wants of its members with reciprocity at every turn. In the Kent Community Timebank, social networks are built on respect and the shared understanding that we all have value.
The Timebank invites the community to come feast with us if you’re interested in becoming a member. Please bring extra food if you’re able. This is a special event, and increasing awareness is very important to KCTB. Are you looking for a new way to find support or to exchange goods and services within your community?
