"Lunar Land For Sale"
These are original watercolor paintings on small square pieces of marble that are enlarged and presented as archival pigment on aluminum. Through this process of magnification we are reminded of the micro and macro discoveries in science. The square format is an homage to Modernism and to reference mapping as a piece of a whole object and location. The Moon Landing was one of the most significant instances in our culture, one that changed how Americans view the Earth, Space and our individual potential. Companies have tried to sell acreage on the Moon, corporations have interest in the privatizing of the Moon by owning or projecting their logo much like the erection of the American flag on the Moon.
I am interested in the Moon as a metaphor, a possession, and a goal.
STATEMENT for "Dirty Snow" series:
"Dirty Snow" photographic series by Michelle Marie Murphy. Once a level of success and comfort is achieved we have time to work towards a better self. As technology and corporatism impel us to consume more and more, caring for our environment becomes daunting or at the end of a long “to do” list.“Dirty Snow” are abstractions of the seasonal dystopian landscape. This type of imagery is familiar, but we often overlook it. Without taking time (or having time) to understand ourselves in our world, we travel through life forwards but sometimes with our eyes closed. The images of natural and urban environments with melted snow peppered or coated with blackened flecks, reminding us that our bustling routines do not allow for the time to investigate and appreciate our habitat.
